Role Summary
This newly created position is essential to the expansion of our Client’s autonomous vehicle capabilities. As a Software Engineer specialising in autonomous surface systems, you will tackle complex technical challenges that shape the future of marine robotics. This role offers a unique chance to influence mission-critical software, driving advancements in sensor integration, obstacle avoidance, and multi-vehicle systems in challenging ocean environments. Your work will directly contribute to innovative solutions that redefine autonomous maritime operations.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain software for control, navigation, and communication of autonomous surface vehicles.
  • Collaborate closely with hardware teams, integrating software with sensors and embedded systems.
  • Develop algorithms leveraging AI and machine learning for obstacle detection and path planning.
  • Enhance multi-vehicle cooperation protocols for surface, underwater, and aerial assets.
  • Create simulation models to test vehicle behaviour in dynamic marine environments.
  • Diagnose and resolve software issues encountered during field operations and sea trials.
  • Document technical specifications, API designs, and testing procedures to ensure robust software life cycle management.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Bachelor’s university degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or an equivalent discipline.
  • At least two year’s experience in software development within robotics, autonomous systems, or embedded platforms.
  • Strong proficiency in C and C++, with exposure to real-time and embedded system programming.
  • Extensive experience with UNIX/Linux environments and POSIX standards.
  • Hands-on knowledge of Robot Operating System (ROS) and networking protocols such as UDP/IP, serial, LTE, WiFi, and satellite communications.
  • Proven problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot complex software issues.
  • Effective communicator capable of working collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.

Desirable Skills & Experience

  • Background in computer vision for obstacle detection and sensor data processing.
  • Practical experience with machine learning applied to autonomous navigation.
  • Familiarity with SLAM techniques for localisation and mapping.
  • Experience with multimedia libraries such as SFML.
  • Marine vessel or autonomous vehicle field test experience, including sea trials.
  • Knowledge of micro controller integration within robotic systems.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally for testing, fieldwork, or technical demonstrations.
  • Ability to obtain relevant security clearances if required.
