Our Client is expanding its engineering capability and is looking for an experienced software professional to join an ambitious, product-led team. As one of the first individual contributor hires, you will have the opportunity to influence engineering practices, technical direction and the development of high-quality products from an early stage.

Role Summary

This is a senior-level opportunity with a strong backend emphasis, involving approximately 80% backend development and 20% frontend contribution.

You will play an important role in shaping robust services, working with complex data and helping translate customer needs into effective technical solutions. As an early engineering hire, your decisions will have a visible impact on the team’s ways of working, product development and future technical foundations.

The role is particularly well suited to an engineer who can work independently, break down complex challenges and contribute beyond simply writing code.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop and maintain reliable backend services and applications.
• Use Python as the preferred backend language, while applying sound software engineering principles.
• Work extensively with PostgreSQL and write, review and optimise SQL queries.
• Analyse data requirements and develop effective solutions for complex data environments.
• Contribute to frontend development using React and TypeScript where required.
• Translate product and customer needs into practical technical designs.
• Break large or ambiguous problems into manageable, deliverable stages.
• Take ownership of technical work from initial design through to implementation and ongoing improvement.
• Collaborate with product and engineering colleagues to deliver valuable, maintainable solutions.
• Help establish strong development practices as the engineering team grows.
• Consider security, reliability, scalability and usability throughout the development lifecycle.

Essential Skills & Experience

• At least six years of professional software engineering experience, ideally with significant backend development exposure.
• Strong experience developing production software using Python, or demonstrable expertise in another modern backend language such as Go or Rust.
• A substantial background in backend engineering, with the ability to contribute to frontend work when needed.
• Practical experience working directly with PostgreSQL or comparable relational databases.
• Strong SQL knowledge, including the ability to explain and use INNER JOIN and LEFT JOIN appropriately.
• Experience writing SQL directly rather than relying exclusively on ORM abstractions.
• Exposure to React and TypeScript.
• Solid understanding of software engineering fundamentals, including maintainability, testing and system design.
• Proven ability to decompose complex technical or product problems.
• Confidence taking independent ownership of work and making sound technical decisions.
• A customer-focused, product-minded approach to engineering.

   U.S. Citizenship is required

Applicants should be able to demonstrate strong SQL capability and explain how they approach complex problem-solving. Candidates whose experience has been limited to ORM-driven development may not be suitable for this position.

Desirable Skills & Experience

The following would strengthen an application but are not essential:

• Experience within the security sector.
• Familiarity with vulnerability management products or processes.
• Background working with large, complex or highly interconnected datasets.
• Previous experience joining an early-stage or rapidly developing engineering team.
• Experience helping define engineering standards, development processes or technical direction.
• A degree or equivalent professional background in computer science or a related discipline.
